Lagu "Yellow Flicker Beat" ini sendiri memuat musik pop rock seperti yang juga terdengar dalam lagu hits Lorde sebelumnya, “Royals” dan “Team”, dari album Pure Heroine. Lorde menggunakan drum secara minim di awal lagu. “I'm a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm/ And the scars that mark my body/ They're silver and gold." Begitu potongan lirik lagu anyar Lorde ini.

Dalam akun Tumblr pribadinya, Lorde mengungkapkan, lagu "Yellow Flicker Beat" diciptakannya ini di sela-sela tur konser. “Setiap malam, setelah aku tampil dan kami melanjutkan perjalanan kami. Aku membuat (lagu) ini di atas kasur kecilku. Aku bekerja dari tengah malam hingga pagi untuk soundtrack ini, bernyanyi di komputer, mendengarkan demonya dan melakukan proses final,” tulis Lorde.

“Aku berharap lagu ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ akan menjadi soundtrack yang kalian sukai. Di lagu ini aku berusaha memikirkan apa yang Katniss pikirkan. Aku berharap kalian menyukainya,” tambah penyanyi bernama lengkap Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor ini.

Walau lagu "Yellow Flicker Beat" ini sudah dirilis, tapi jadwal rilis album soundtrack film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 ini belum diumumkan. Adapun film yang dibintangi Jennifer Lawrence ini akan dirilis di Amerika Serikat pada 21 November 2014. Film garapan sutradara Francis Lawrence ini merupakan bagian pertama dari novel terakhir "The Hunger Games", yaitu "Mockingjay", karya Suzanne Collins.
